How to detect blood oxygen saturation?

Checking the oxygen saturation in the blood can help diagnose or monitor lung disease.

Test methods to detect blood oxygen saturation include:

pulse oximeter

blood oxygen sensor

pulse oximeter

What is a pulse oximeter?

Oxygen is carried in red blood cells through a molecule called hemoglobin. A pulse oximeter measures the amount of oxygen carried by hemoglobin in the blood. This is called blood oxygen saturation and is a percentage (out of 100). This is a simple, non-invasive test, usually using a pulse oximeter or blood oxygen sensor placed on the fingertip or earlobe.

What does a pulse oximeter do?

People with lung disease may have lower-than-normal blood oxygen levels, so a pulse oximeter can help diagnose a problem. The more damaged the lungs are, the more likely there is a problem with oxygen uptake. A pulse oximeter can also be used to measure how badly a person’s lungs are affected. This test can be done as a one-time field measurement. It can also be used to measure oxygen levels over time, such as during exercise such as walking or while you are asleep.

What is a blood oxygen sensor?

The blood oxygen sensor, the full name of the blood oxygen saturation probe (SpO2 Sensor/SpO2 Probe in English), is called the optical measurement method from a medical point of view. It is a non-invasive method using a photoelectric sensor. As a transparent container for hemoglobin, using red light with a wavelength of 660 nm and near-infrared light with a wavelength of 900-940 nm as the incident light source, the intensity of light transmission through the tissue bed was measured to calculate the hemoglobin concentration and blood oxygen saturation. Through SpO2 monitoring, SpO2, pulse rate and pulse wave can be obtained. It is used for blood oxygen monitoring of various patients, usually the other end is connected to an ECG monitor

What does a blood oxygen sensor do?

Continuous SPO2 monitoring can significantly improve the clinical ability to monitor hypoxemia, thereby preventing unexpected events due to hypoxia and improving patient safety

Dynamic monitoring of SPO2 can reflect pulmonary oxygenation status and guide respiratory therapy

How to prepare before testing blood oxygen saturation?

Nail polish or fake nails can block light and affect measurements. Therefore, the fingernails to be measured should be cleaned before measurement. This will help get accurate measurements.
